Ban on domestic violence abusers owning guns upheld by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court handed down a major victory for gun control advocates, ruling that domestic abusers can be barred from owning guns. In an 8-1 decision, the court rejected a 2nd Amendment challenge to the federal law that makes it illegal for people with domestic violence restraining orders to possess firearms. Why Ukrainian children are appearing on Russian adoption sites and the efforts to bring them home

A recent investigation by the Financial Times found that Ukrainian children taken by Russia in the early months of the war were put up for adoption by Russian authorities. In all, close to 20,000 children have been taken during the war, according to Ukrainian officials. Wayne Jordash, president of Global Rights Compliance, an international humanitarian law firm, spoke with PBS News about efforts to reunite these children with their families and whether Russia can be held accountable. The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a federal law that bans someone with a domestic violence restraining order against them from possessing a gun or other firearm. “When a restraining order contains a finding that an individual poses a credible threat to the physical safety of an intimate partner, that individual may — consistent with the Second Amendment — be banned from possessing firearms while the order is in effect,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion issued Friday. How Kyiv copes with blackouts after Russia bombards power grid

Kyiv residents live day-to-day unsure of whether they’ll have electricity. The Tkalich family with a 2-month-old uses camping stoves and candles to get by. “This is common, many Kyiv residents, many Ukrainians deal with shortages in this way. I think our situation is not the worst. But with the baby, it seriously complicates our reality,” said Valeriy Tkalich, translated. Ukrainian authorities say the spring Russian offensive took out about half of the country’s energy and power generation capacity and that damage to infrastructure will present challenges for years to come. Columbia University protest escalates with students occupying building on campus

Protests took a dramatic turn at Columbia University overnight when some pro-Palestinian students occupied a building on campus. In California, police arrested 25 protesters at California State Polytechnic University who had taken over a building for about a week and shut down the campus.
