Re-Elect Cheryl Davila and Ben Bartlett Says Berkeley Friends Of Adeline Post To Black Voters

Cheryl Davila And Ben Bartlett Berkeley Councilmembers (Photo courtesy Berkeley Tenants Union)

Berkeley – A blog called “Friends Of Adeline” has a post that hits one right between the eyes with the title “For ‘Black’ Berkeleyans, There Are Only Two: Re-Elect Cheryl Davila and Ben Bartlett”, and referring to Berkeley City Councilmembers Ben Bartlett of District 3 and Cheryl Davila of District 2. Here it is, below. I’m posting it here, because absent this action, it’s not the easiest content to find in online search, yet it should be seen and read by many.

Here it is:

For ‘Black’ Berkeleyans, There Are Only Two: Re-Elect Cheryl Davila and Ben Bartlett
October 22, 2020 Friends of Adeline (Photo Courtesy Berkeley Tenants Union)

By Paul Lee

Friends of Adeline

Since I believe that the dangerous mythology of “race,” which has no basis in science, is the root of the even more dangerous reality of racism, I’ve enclosed all “racial” terms in quotes so as not to legitimize either. — PL.

I don’t know if African American Berkeley City Council members Cheryl Davila and Ben Bartlett are friends. Frankly, I don’t care.

What matters to me and, I could assert with confidence, most “black” Berkeleyans is that, more often than not, they can be counted on to do right by us.

This is more than could be said for their council colleagues and the rest of those in our city’s mostly-spineless, sellout, in-the-pocket-of-developers government.

‘Blackness’ Ain’t Enough

However, Ben and Cheryl shouldn’t be supported because they’re “black,” although this can offer the advantages of familiarity and personal investment. Fundamentally, it’s a question of character and commitment. We, as an oppressed people, have learned from painful betrayals that “all skin folk ain’t kinfolk.”

For example, it would be both obscene and terribly destructive if someone who looks like us were to run for office, but only did so at the behest and with the support of rich, “white” real estate interests. This would only facilitate and legitimize the complete colonization or takeover of what’s left of “black” Berkeley.

Forgotten Islands

I’m 60 years old and for all of my life and longer “black” Berkeley — that is, the historically “black” enclaves in the south and west of the city — have been islands of official, damnable neglect.

Indeed, the only branch of government to consistently pay attention to these districts has been the police department, but that’s not the kind of attention that anyone would want because it’s about containment and control under the cover of fighting crime.

‘Mississippi West’

But the real crime began when “black” and other non-“white” peoples were herded by redlining into these districts like cattle, then abandoned to their own devices to make them viable communities — without the supports accorded to the rest of the city, meaning the “white” parts.

With bravery, sacrifice, ingenuity and vision, we did this, despite the racism of Berkeley’s “Mississippi West” government, as many of us called it.

We recognized that it only differed from the infamous Southern bastion of “racial” segregation in how it structured its inequality, which was more urbane and less obviously violent — with the notable exception of the police, whose habitual brutality against us made believable the rumor that many of these officers were recruited from the South.

In another respect, Berkeley was worse than its Southern cousin because it didn’t begin to desegregate its schools, thru compulsory busing, until 1968 — that is, 14 years after the U. S. Supreme Court declared this U. S. brand of apartheid unconstitutional.

But there were also subtler, but not less damaging, forms of violence. Obligating these majority-“black” districts to have to create, from scratch, and sustain, without support, what others could take for granted was a psychic, emotional and material assault upon our dignity.

Unchanged

That’s why we need Cheryl and Ben to remain in office. That’s also why we and our allies must fight to put more people like them on the council and in other positions of authority — people who care about and work for all of Berkeley, not just rich, “white” Berkeley, including the entitled newcomers.

Most “white” Berkeleyans don’t have a clue about any of this history, which, for us, hasn’t fundamentally changed. We are where we began — at the bottom, ignored, isolated, not seriously considered in the councils of power, where we are occasionally spoken about, but rarely given the respect to speak for ourselves.

Only Two

But where we once survived, and even thrived, in “a place of our own,” as one longtime African American resident described “black” Berkeley, nourished and protected by businesses and institutions that we built, most of which collapsed under the weight of successive economic downturns and a drug scourge that hit us first and hardest, now we’re being forced out of all that we had left — our homes.

And who listens to us? Who fights for us? Only Cheryl and Ben, dependably. That’s pathetic and unjust, but it’s also par for the course in this faux “progressive” city, where, as usual, we’re compelled to mostly rely upon ourselves.

Of course, two reliable city council members, no matter how enlightened, can’t alone protect the interests of “black” Berkeleyans. However, as veteran politicians, they can and do occasionally sway, negotiate with or pressure their colleagues to do right by us.

Allies

However, in our long fight for recognition, equity and a justice that was never simple, we have real allies, most of whom don’t look like us and aren’t from here. Just as we couldn’t care less if Cheryl and Ben are best buds, we aren’t interested in what motivates our allies.

We simply accept them as comrades in the fight to make Berkeley in reality what it has fooled the world to believe that it is, but has never been — namely, an inclusive city, where everyone is given the dignity, opportunity, security and justice that should be the common lot of all people.

If you’re an ally, do whatever you can to maintain Cheryl’s and Ben’s positions.

If you aren’t, considered becoming one because — and I ask you to trust me on this because I’ve lived it — Berkeley’s greatest strength has always been its rich cultural diversity, even though our government has almost never supported this.

Perhaps, ironically, that’s what made it so unique and powerful — because the people themselves marshaled it as a resource.

Which Way, Berkeley?

Berkeley’s best future can and should be built upon its past — by learning from its mistakes and benefitting from its successes. Until we can increase their number, Cheryl and Ben are the best hope for this freer, fairer future, or at least a hedge against the obnoxious continuance of its ugly past.

We deserve better. Our children and grandchildren deserve still more. That’s why we’re asking you: Support and vote for Cheryl and Ben. Thank you.

Port of Oakland 1927 to 2020

Port Of Oakland 1927 To 2020

Port of Oakland 1927 to 2020
From YouTube Channel: October 14, 2020 at 05:14PM
ONN – Port of Oakland’s powerful legacy began more than 165 years ago. The Port’s past encompassed the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, two World Wars, and America’s coming of age as a global power. This two-minute video begins in 1927 when the Port was officially established and highlights significant moments in time at the Oakland seaport, airport and waterfront property.

Maritime: In the 1960s, it was the first major port on the West Coast to build terminals for container ships, a revolutionary technology at the time. Today, the Port of Oakland innovates and invests in its seaport infrastructure so that it continues to serve as a global gateway and vital U.S. export transportation hub.

Aviation: In 1962 completion of the 600-acre Oakland International Airport (OAK) complex inaugurated the era of the jetliner. Shipping giants FedEx and UPS have long-established West Coast hubs at OAK providing critical air cargo service and generating thousands of jobs.

Commerical Real Estate: The Oakland waterfront has served as a community destination since the 1950’s. It is a major player in Oakland’s current urban renaissance, creating jobs, housing, recreation and leisure activities. The Port’s portfolio includes Jack London Square where the public has access to stunning views of the waterfront, recreation, and indoor-outdoor dining options.

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has presented difficult challenges to all three lines of business. The Port and its dedicated staff have adjusted to the dramatic changes in the work environment, with safety protocols in place.

Business recovery is underway with fresh strategies on how to succeed moving forward, responsibly and sustainably. The Port will continue to adjust, invest, and innovate, to continue its legacy as a major economic driver, supporting tens of thousands of jobs in California and touching hundreds of thousands of jobs across the nation.

The overall objective here, on top of our is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours – is the use of the existing YouTube social graph on any subject in the World. Now, news is reported with a smartphone and also by promoting current content on YouTube: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary, or having a camera crew to shoot what is already on YouTube. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Las Vegas People Mover To Allegiant Stadium Could Benefit From Tax Increment Financing

Boring Tunnel Starts (photo by exhibitcitynews.com)

On Thursday, October 15th, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority, which owns the $2.2 billion Allegiant Stadium that’s home to the Las Vegas Raiders, will take up an exciting project: Pay Pal founder Elon Musk’s tunneling and transportation startup The Boring Company’s Las Vegas People Mover To Allegiant Stadium.

Specifically, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority will give thumbs up to the eventual building of a station stop at Raiders Stadium. But the question is, how did we get here?

The project started last May 19th, 2019, when The Boring Company landed a $48.7 million project to shuttle people in an underground Loop system around the Las Vegas Convention Center. But, as happens with this ever changing project in a city that likes to jump on futuristic transportation ideas as early adopters (like the Disney-style Monorail system that is now a bankrupt organization with miles of unused track over and around the Las Vegas Convention Center), casino executives, and now the Raiders, want in on what The Boring Company’s working on.

All of this, while there’s no news on any increase in project funding!

Las Vegas People Mover Proposed Route Tree
Las Vegas People Mover Proposed Route Tree

And just what is it? Basically, it takes the Disney People Mover concept and puts it underground – except it does not use small cart style cars propelled by linear-induction motors. Rather, it uses what are best described as electronic guide wheel cars. If you see the proposed route, and consider that, for events like CES, the Las Vegas Strip can be and has been paralyzed by cars and taxis and ride-share vehicles taking people everywhere throughout the town, then you automatically see the potential for what Elon Musk’s building.

And that’s why I believe the routes off the Las Vegas Convention Center and to and Allegiant Stadium will dramatically increase real estate activity in the parcels of land that are along the underground tracks. Right now, there’s no way to literally capture the increased real estate land value that is already happening because of the twin developments of Allegiant Stadium and the Las Vegas People Mover. But a tax increment financing zone would allow such revenue to be captured.

The way tax increment financing (TIF) works is that the Nevada Legislature would have to approve an adjustment in Senate Bill One, allowing the designation of a TIF zone around Allegiant Stadium. The reason for this, is that the direction of the collection of property tax has to be shifted to a special organization tasked with using the TIF revenue by legislation – here, that would be The Las Vegas Stadium Authority on behalf of Clark County. The Las Vegas Stadium Authority has to approve the proposal before it can move on to the Nevada Legislature.

Once the Nevada Legislature approves the addition (or re-addition) of the TIF zone since something like what I am referring to was in the original Senate Bill One of 2017, the matter of ratifying the TIF zone then goes to Clark County (if I recall how municipal governance is done in Nevada).

Of course, prior to all of that, Clark County has to draw up the TIF zone around Allegiant Stadium. The property tax collected from that zone can be used, in part, to help finance the Las Vegas People Mover Allegiant Stadium Station.

Hopefully, Clark County does some kind of action to help pay for the station, as well as the other off-site infrastructure improvements needed so that patrons can easily get to the Raiders new NFL stadium.

Stay tuned.

Ray Bobbitt, Bill Duffy, Robert Bobb, Alan Dones, Loop Capital: Black Developer Group Bidding $92 Million For Oakland Coliseum

Ray Bobbitt Oakland

Oakland News: A letter was passed to me moments ago that outlines the interest of the African American Sports & Entertainment Group in purchasing the Oakland Coliseum site for $92 million. The group consists of Ray Bobbitt, who spearheaded the African American Oakland NFL Expansion effort, which is part of this group’s focus, famed sports agent Bill Duffy, who was also part of the Ronnie Lott Group development team that tried to retain the Raiders in Oakland but lost them to Las Vegas, Oakland developer Alan Dones, former Oakland City Manager and one of my mentors Robert Bobb, and Chicago’s Loop Capital, where a family friend of mine, Darrell Williams, is good friends with former President Barack Obama, and is in the photo below with Loop Capital’s Chief Executive Officer Jim Reynolds.

UPDATE: An Old Personality From Oakland’s Problem-Laden Sports Stadium Development History Is Back: Rick Tripp

I also know through a source that Oakland District Seven Councilmember Larry Reid has talked with Ray Bobbitt about this proposal as recently as last Friday. Here’s the letter, below, after the photo.

ECONOMIC EQUITY THROUGH SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT DEVELOPMENT

1423 Broadway #183, Oakland, CA 94612

October 6, 2020

The Honorable Mayor Libby Schaaf

& Members of the Oakland City Council
City of Oakland, California

One Frank H. Ogawa Plaza
Oakland, CA 94612

Dear Mayor Schaaf and esteemed Oakland City Council Members,

The African American Sports & Entertainment Group (“AASEG”) has been working over the last several months to lay the groundwork for bringing a National Football League (“NFL”) franchise back to Oakland. One of the critical factors in our ability to attract a new NFL franchise is a viable home field location for the team. As well, we recognize the interests of city leadership in the holistic redevelopment of the Coliseum area consistent with the vision articulated by the 2015 Coliseum Area Specific Plan. We also recognize the City of Oakland’s interest in maintaining a home for its Major League Baseball (“MLB”) franchise, the Oakland Athletics. We believe that all these objectives can be achieved and to these ends, we have assembled a Master Development Team well-capable of marshalling the resources and expertise necessary to transform our mutual interests into reality. Our team, described as the “AASEG Team”, is pleased to submit this non-binding, indication of Interest, proposal to purchase the City of Oakland’s interest in the Coliseum property for a total of Ninety Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($92,500,000), payable per the schedule provided in Exhibit A.

The AASEG Team

In addition to the enormous community support for our mutual vision, AASEG has assembled a Master Development Team fully capable of executing the development of the Coliseum property (the “Project”).

Bill Duffy With Yao Ming
Bill Duffy With Yao Ming

▪ BDA Sports Management – Led by respected sports agent Bill Duffy, BDA is one of the world’s top ranked sports agencies focused, specifically on basketball. Bill has agreed to apply his extensive network and decades of experience toward execution of the Project, including assembling some of the leading names in sports and entertainment in support and endorsement of the Project. Bill was one of the architects of the Ronnie Lott/Fortress Capital plan that offered a viable option to build a stadium on the Coliseum site.

▪ Strategic Urban Development Alliance – One of Oakland’s largest African American real estate development firms, SUDA has executed millions of dollars’ worth of projects in the Bay Area. SUDA Chief Executive Officer, Alan Dones, has led development projects both in the United States and Africa. He will provide development consulting to the Project.

▪ The Robert Bobb Group, LLC – With specialty capabilities in economic development, urban planning and community and neighborhood engagement, RBG is an African American owned national consulting firm to both public and private sector clients. Chief Executive Officer Robert Bobb will provide consulting services to the Project.

▪ Loop Capital – The largest African American owned, full services investment banking brokerage, financial advisory and investment management organization, Loop Capital boasts a 23-year history of developing financial solutions for America’s largest public sector institutions and private sector firms. In addition to its global capital markets, Loop Capital is an experienced advisor on Public-Private-Partnership and infrastructure transactions. As well, Loop Capital is part of a team developing a 100+ acre parcel owned by the City of Chicago and the Metropolitan Pier Authority. Finally, Loop Capital’s Chief Executive Officer Jim Reynolds is a partner in JLC Infrastructure, a private asset manager with over $800 million under management targeting investments in various publicly owned assets. Loop Capital is the capital partner for the Project.

Stakeholder Interests

The AASEG Team is well aware of the aspirations of the citizens of Oakland and other stakeholders with respect to the Project and is prepared to engage the City as a partner in the execution of a mutually-agreed upon vision embodied in a Community Benefits Agreement that includes:

• Local hiring with priority on racial equity

• The engagement and inclusion of local and small business contractors
and businesses

• Environmentally friendly landscaping and sustainable, energy efficient
design

• Anti-displacement assistance and housing preservation policies for
residents in the development area

• The inclusion of affordable housing

• Project Labor agreements and labor peace

• Local employment and job access provisions, workforce training,
retention of existing workers, and apprenticeship policies

• Living wages, benefits, and stable employment opportunities

• Environmental mitigation measures

• Open space elements

• Sustainable and healthy development

• Transportation infrastructure and transportation demand management
programs, including transit affordability and accessibility

• Potential impact fee’s (housing, transportation, capital improvements)

• Other community benefits as needed and feasible, to be negotiated

Finally, we are keenly aware of the interests of the Oakland Athletics organization in a second option for a baseball stadium should current objectives not come to fruition. The AASEG team is prepared to maintain development space in the Project toward those ends and looks forward to engaging the A’s to fully understand and address their interests.
The AASEG Team is excited to work with the City of Oakland to develop a definitive agreement for the purchase and Master Developer control of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum complex and is prepared to engage staff and leadership to craft an agreement that reflects the provisions in this indication of Interest. We are eager to begin due diligence activities and formal discussions upon the City of Oakland’s acceptance of this non-binding offer. We believe that this historic undertaking will be a perfect example of the African American community being supported by the larger community in achieving economic equality. We are extremely grateful to be in a position to provide jobs and housing for the citizens of Oakland, and to continue to provide world-class sports and entertainment facilities for the entire East Bay region.

As America wrestles with social change, social justice, and economic justice, Oakland can lead the way in demonstrating what real impact is. As proud Oaklanders, it is a part of our DNA. It is simply who we are, and what we do best. We look forward to helping lead that change in the City of Oakland.

Sincerely,

Ray Bobbitt

Oakland Coliseum Property Purchase Proposal
Schedule of Proposed Payments

Schedule of Proposed Payments:

At closing: $10,000,000

At the end of year one: $10,000,000
Year 2: $12,500,000
Year 3: $15,000,000
Year 4: $17,500,000
Year 5: $15,000,000
Year 6: $12,500,000

Again, with respect to the NFL, the same lawsuit that Ray Bobbitt invested $40,000 to start and against the former Oakland Raiders now Las Vegas Raiders and the NFL is not only still active, but restarts October 8th. For the group to have a snow-ball’s chance in hell with the NFL, that lawsuit would have to be dropped.

That said, if the group can gain some kind of joint control with the Oakland A’s, then the prospect of the NFL returning to Oakland becomes that much more realistic. Why? Because they will have control of land to build a new stadium for an NFL expansion team, or an existing organization.

Stay tuned for updates. Here is the letter on file:

City Of Oakland, Main Street Launch Open Grant Program For Oakland Small Businesses

City of Oakland

Oakland – The City of Oakland received $36.9 million in State of California CARES Act funding. More than $4 million of those funds will go to the Oakland CARES Act Small Business Grant Program to support Oakland small businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program anticipates distributing $10,000 grants to 402 Oakland small businesses.

Grants may be used to cover day-to-day operating costs, such as worker payroll, rent and fixed debts. The application period for the small business grants opened today (Tuesday, September 22) at 1 p.m., and ends at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2020. Online applications in four languages are available at: https://mainstreetlaunch.org/oakland-cares-act-grant/

“Many Oakland small businesses that employ our residents and provide vital goods and services for us all have suffered greatly during the closures to combat the spread of COVID-19,” said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf. “These CARES Act-funded grants are meant to help sustain the local, independent merchants that add so much to our community as they pivot to new business models for the pandemic and post-pandemic economies.”

Eligibility requirements:

· Be an existing for-profit business since March 1, 2019 with a commercial location in Oakland

· Be able to demonstrate adverse business impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic

· Have gross revenues under $2,000,000 in 2019

· Have a current City of Oakland business license

· Have no City of Oakland life safety code violations

· Be in compliance with all County Health Orders and State Regulations

· Have not received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan of more than $10,000

· Have not received a grant from the Oakland CARES Fund for Artists and Arts Non-profits

· Have at least one, but no more than 50 full-time equivalent employees, including the business owner(s)

The following businesses are not eligible for funding through this grant program: Nonprofits, passive income real estate businesses, cannabis-related businesses, adult entertainment businesses, franchises, any business involved in bankruptcy proceedings or religious organizations (See FAQs for complete list).

Disbursement of grants funds to the selected recipients is anticipated to be completed by Friday, October 30, 2020.

The grants will help prevent displacement and closures of small businesses that contribute to the City’s diversity, vibrancy and character. Distribution of the CARES Act grants for small businesses is through a partnership between the City of Oakland’s Economic & Workforce Development Department and Main Street Launch. A trusted intermediary focused on equitable economic development, Main Street Launch is administering the Oakland CARES Act Small Business Grant Program.

“Main Street is looking forward to helping Oakland’s small businesses at this critical moment in the city’s recovery from the pandemic,” said Jacob Singer, CEO of Main Street Launch. “By helping the City provide these grants to support Oakland’s dynamic small business community, we collectively envision a time when we will all be able to gather together again in support of the businesses that make Oakland a unique and lively place to work and live.”

To assist applicants, answers to frequently asked questions have been posted at: https://mainstreetlaunch.org/oakland-cares-act-grant/ Support for technical questions is also available by emailing [email protected].

To align with the Oakland City Council’s direction and equity goals, the funds will be allocated to prioritize both geographic diversity throughout Oakland, and districts containing vulnerable communities, as represented by the Opportunity Zone-qualified and Opportunity Zone-designated census tracts. $2 million of grants have been specifically earmarked for businesses located in Opportunity Zone-designated census tracts. These historically vulnerable communities were selected based on aggregated demographic characteristics of each tract’s resident population as reported by the U.S. Census.

This is the latest CARES Act-funded grant program launched by the City of Oakland. Grant programs for low-income renter and homeowner relief and artists and arts nonprofits as well as an RFQ to fund support for low- and moderate-income renters and homeowners were announced earlier this month. Mayor Libby Schaaf has FORCED people to live in only “Soft” shelters on Oakland’s streets. My Tiny Home HOA’s would remove these “Death Shelters” from many hazards including intentional “Burnouts”. As we begin to head into Winter, more encampment fires via Accident or Vandalism, will occur more frequently. My PATH Program utilizing Arched Cabins are STEEL framed with a STEEL exterior, and can house EVERY Homeless person for a fraction of the $23 MILLION spent every year since 2016. Oakland has the Real Estate in the Oakland Land Trust, but Mayor Schaaf refuses to make available, that List. Those properties normally would be “Sold” to the highest bidder. Guess who is buying those properties? SLUMLORDS, Developers & “Filppers”.

Kofi has a range and unique combination of design experience and real estate investment knowledge that will take Bedrock to new heights.

Congratulations, Kofi! He starts September 21st.

Stay tuned.
