ONN – Here is the 1000-foot American Century arriving in Duluth-Superior on the morning of August 18, 2020. She was empty on arrival and was in town to pick up a load of coal from the Midwest Energy Terminal in Superior. We first see her enter the Duluth Shipping Canal, where we get the traditional captain’s salute as she passes under the Aerial Lift Bridge. (And of course, we hear the reply from the bridge in return.) I then moved to Rice’s Point to watch the American Century do a reverse pivot so she could back up to the dock at Midwest Energy, after passing under the John A. Blatnik highway bridge. Regular viewers to this channel have no doubt seen this sequence of events before.

One thing that was notable about this visit (for me, at least) was the action of the American Century’s bow thrusters, seen at 7:06 in this video. While one often sees the swirl of water around the thrusters while they are in use, I have never seen quite so much movement of the water as I did with this arrival. Perhaps it’s because the Century was riding high in the water and the thrusters were closer to the surface. The American Century is outfitted with two sets of thrusters, one at the bow and one at the stern. These thrusters help with steering the ship while in port, helping to dock without the aid of tugboat for assistance. Most lakers in service today have thrusters for this reason. Even ships that weren’t originally built with thrusters usually had them installed later on. The circular symbol painted above the waterline shows where the thrusters are located along the hull.

Oakland, Utah, Wyoming: Subsidize Coal – Climate Change Is Due To Population Growth, Not Energy Type

Negative Population Growth

The largest single threat to the ecology and biodiversity of the planet in the decades to come will be global climate disruption due to the buildup of human-generated greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. People around the world are beginning to address the problem by reducing their carbon footprint through less consumption and better technology. But unsustainable human population growth can overwhelm those efforts, leading us to conclude that we not only need smaller footprints, but fewer feet.

The Center For Biological Diversity

Oakland, Utah, Wyoming, and other parts of America involved in the debate over coal need a wake up call. In the ongoing policy debate about the Insight Terminal Solutions’ Oakland Bulk and Oversized Terminal, the words of America’s Power President Michelle Bloodworth are a sober reminder of the need to maintain the reliable and affordable source of energy provided by coal.

In The Washington Times (sad that Michelle has to go to a conservative publication to address a problem that should not be a political issue), she wrote:

Policymakers know that our nation’s fleet of coal-fired power plants play an indispensable role in powering our lives, helping ensure that the electricity grid is both reliable and resilient. The coal fleet contributes to the nation’s fuel security and diversity, and serves as an insurance policy against electricity shortages and price spikes.

These are the functions of critical infrastructure during the best of times. In the face of the current, unprecedented crisis, the role of the coal sector assumes even greater importance.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has jurisdiction over the criteria that most of these policymakers rely upon to determine which segments of our economy represent essential enterprises, listed coal power as “uniquely critical” in guidance issued in March. Essential critical infrastructure like coal, DHS said, is “imperative during the response to the COVID-19 emergency for both public health and safety and community well-being.”

And while the nation’s power grid is diverse, no fuel source is more resilient than coal in the face of unexpected or extreme events. During the Bomb Cyclone of 2018, for example, more than 60 percent of incremental electricity demand was met by coal, while natural gas, wind and solar power faced outages.

Today, our fleet of coal power plants are playing an essential role in our nation’s response to the pandemic.

The Real Climate Change Problem Is Not Energy But World Population Growth

What is bothersome right now is that mob rule has come to have some say over America and the World’s energy future. What the mob should pay attention to is the very growth of, well, the mob. And by that, I mean world population control.

The simple fact is that climate change is due to a large and increasing Earth population density. Few want to pay attention to the real truth: we have to control future population growth. That has not been done, or pushed – reducing coal production and dreaming of a shift from traditional energy will not solve the problem; population growth control will. Calling for the “end of coal” is a silly pipe dream advanced by those who fear to see the real truth.

Stephanie Feldstein, population and sustainability director for the Center for Biological Diversity, one of the environmental groups that addresses the link between population and climate change in its work, said: “If we don’t address population growth, our efforts to reduce that pressure on the climate and habitat and water resources will always be an uphill battle.”

And the report called “Why PoPulation Matters to Climate Change” by Population Action International, had this to add to the discussion:

Areas of high population growth and high vulnerability to climate change impacts overlap. Evidence suggests that the poorest countries and poorest groups within a population are most vulnerable to climate-related hazards such as floods, droughts, and landslides.2 Many developing countries are currently experiencing rapid population growth, increasing the number of people who will be exposed to projected impacts of climate change. Other demographic trends, such as urbanization in coastal areas and encroachment of populations into ecologically marginal areas, such as hillsides or degraded land, can exacerbate climate risks.

Zennie62Media is proud to have been commissioned by Insight Terminal Solutions to use its vast media platform and technology to get out the truth about climate change, and de-politicize energy economic development so we can maintain an affordable and safe standard of living. Further, I am personally committed to an effort to change the argument to save the World. The current over-politicized energy policy environment dooms the World to an uncertain energy future amid constant climate change, completely undisrupted by decline in the use of transitional energy sources.

It’s possible to have what we are already creating: a cleaner traditional energy industry. But killing traditional energy will not solve the climate change problem – population control will. Any claim to the contrary is baseless. The simple fact that a room gets warmer with more people in it is all of the model evidence one needs to show the larger global problem. We have to stop dooming traditional energy jobs and start saving them via improving the plant and equipment used.

In closing, if you have never seen the 1973 movie Soylent Green starring Charlton Heston, that film provides a more realistic model of a future we don’t want than any other popular culture has provided:

Soylent Green is a 1973 American science fiction film directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Charlton Heston and, in his final film, Edward G. Robinson. The film overlays the police procedural and science fiction genres as it depicts the investigation into the murder of a wealthy businessman in a dystopian future suffering from pollution, overpopulation, depleted resources, poverty, dying oceans, and a hot climate due to the greenhouse effect. Much of the population survives on processed food rations, including “soylent green”.

Review Data on Monday, August 31 at 8:00 a.m. EDT

BRISBANE, Calif., Aug. 29, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — MyoKardia, Inc. (Nasdaq: MYOK) announced today that 30-week results from its pivotal Phase 3 EXPLORER-HCM clinical trial of mavacamten for the treatment of symptomatic, obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) were presented during a live Hot Line session at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2020 (ESC Congress 2020). Results from the EXPLORER-HCM study were simultaneously published in The Lancet. MyoKardia previously announced topline data from the EXPLORER-HCM study showing that patients treated with mavacamten experienced statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in symptoms, functional status and key aspects of quality of life. In addition to meeting the primary and all secondary endpoints, mavacamten was well tolerated with a safety profile similar to placebo. The data presented today and reported in the published manuscript also include mavacamten’s positive impact on reducing cardiac biomarkers associated with poor prognosis and demonstrate the consistency of its therapeutic benefit across multiple prespecified subgroups.

“Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can be a debilitating, chronic and progressive condition in patients, impairing the function of the heart and lowering patients’ quality of life. Mavacamten is the first therapeutic candidate to target the heart muscle proteins that drive the excessive contractility and impaired relaxation that are hallmarks of HCM with the intent of correcting the abnormal function of the heart. The results from EXPLORER provide clear, convincing evidence of the therapeutic effect of such a targeted mechanism of action; mavacamten was shown to alleviate the obstruction of the left ventricle and improve patients’ symptoms and cardiac function,” said Daniel Jacoby, M.D., Director, Comprehensive Heart Failure Program at the Yale School of Medicine, an investigator in the EXPLORER-HCM study.

The randomized, controlled, pivotal EXPLORER-HCM Phase 3 clinical trial enrolled 251 symptomatic, obstructive patients with HCM, most of whom were on standard background HCM therapy. Among the new data presented today, mavacamten treatment was shown to markedly reduce key biomarkers of cardiac wall stress and injury in a pronounced and clinically meaningful way. Serum concentrations of N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) from baseline to Week 30 were reduced by 80%, to near normal levels, in the mavacamten treatment group relative to placebo. NT-proBNP is a well-established biomarker of cardiac wall stress that has been associated with increased mortality in HCM patients.(1,2) The decrease in NT-proBNP was observed at the earliest timepoint measured (Week 4) and was sustained throughout the 30-week treatment period. Similarly, reductions in cardiac troponin (hs-cTnI) from baseline to Week 30 were 41% greater in the mavacamten-treated cohort compared to placebo. Cardiac troponin I is closely associated with increased incidence of heart failure, atrial fibrillation and death in patients with HCM.(1,3)

“The early and durable reductions toward normal levels of well-established biomarkers associated with cardiac wall stress and injury provide us with early indications that mavacamten may be able to reduce risk of serious complications and poor outcomes,” said Jay Edelberg, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer. “The reductions in biomarkers seen in the EXPLORER-HCM study are consistent with our observations of mavacamten’s impact on biomarkers across all of our studies of HCM as well as with the hemodynamic and structural benefits that we see taking place in the heart via cardiac imaging. We will be looking to our long-term studies for further evidence of the potential of mavacamten to alter the course of disease by returning the heart to a healthier state.”

As previously reported, mavacamten demonstrated a robust treatment effect in the Phase 3 study. The primary endpoint, a composite functional analysis designed to capture the treatment effect of mavacamten relative to placebo on both symptoms and cardiac function, was met with statistical significance (p=0.0005). Additionally, mavacamten demonstrated beneficial results (p<0.0006) for all secondary endpoints: post-exercise left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) peak gradient, peak VO2, New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification, the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Clinical Summary Score (KCCQ-CSS), and the HCM Symptom Questionnaire Shortness of Breath Domain Score. Data presented today and published in The Lancet reveal that mavacamten’s benefit versus placebo for the primary and all secondary endpoints extended across all prespecified subgroups. Specifically, the reduction in obstruction and the improvements in exercise capacity and clinician (NYHA) and patient (KCCQ and HCMSQ) assessments favoring mavacamten over placebo were highly consistent regardless of age, gender, genetic status, body mass index, background use of beta blockers, or baseline measures of ejection fraction, NYHA class and NT-proBNP. “The consistency of mavacamten’s effects in reducing obstruction and improving symptoms and quality of life across nearly a dozen pre-specified subgroups is a strong testament to the potential broad applicability of this therapy in obstructive HCM,” said Iacopo Olivotto, M.D., of the Cardiomyopathy Unit, Careggi University Hospital and lead clinical investigator for the EXPLORER-HCM clinical trial. “It has been extremely gratifying to directly witness the benefits derived from treatment with mavacamten among my patients who were on study, and I look forward to mavacamten becoming an integral tool in the treatment of patients with obstructive HCM in the future.” Mavacamten was well tolerated and demonstrated safety results similar to placebo, with no new findings observed from those previously reported. Ninety-seven percent of patients enrolled completed the study treatment period. Overall rates of adverse events, serious adverse events, and cardiac adverse events, including atrial fibrillation, were comparable for patients treated with mavacamten and placebo. Mavacamten was granted breakthrough therapy designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in July 2020. MyoKardia plans to submit a New Drug Application for mavacamten to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the first quarter of 2021.

About EXPLORER-HCM

The EXPLORER-HCM Phase 3 trial enrolled a total of 251 patients with symptomatic (NYHA Class II or III), obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. All participants had measurable LVOT gradient (resting and/or provoked) ≥50 mmHg at baseline. Patients were randomized on a 1:1 basis to receive individualized once-daily dosing of mavacamten or placebo. Patients started on a dose of 5mg, with up to two opportunities for dose adjustments (to doses of 2.5mg – 15mg) based on a combination of residual LVOT gradient, drug plasma concentration and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) levels.

The primary endpoint for EXPLORER-HCM was a composite functional analysis designed to capture mavacamten’s effect on both symptoms and function. The composite functional endpoint is defined by either (1) the achievement of a ≥1.5mL/kg/min improvement in peak VO2 accompanied by an improvement of ≥1 NYHA functional class, or (2) the achievement of a ≥3.0mL/kg/min improvement of peak VO2 with no worsening in NYHA functional class. In addition to the endpoints reported today, the EXPLORER-HCM study also assessed mavacamten’s effect on patient-reported outcomes, health-related quality-of-life and symptom severity assessments, changes from baseline to Week 30 in echocardiographic indices, circulating biomarkers, cardiac rhythm patterns and accelerometry.

About HCM

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a chronic, progressive disease in which excessive contraction of the heart muscle and reduced ability of the left ventricle to fill can lead to the development of debilitating symptoms and cardiac dysfunction. HCM is estimated to affect one in every 500 people. The most frequent cause of HCM is mutations in the heart muscle proteins of the sarcomere. In approximately two-thirds of HCM patients, the path followed by blood exiting the heart, known as the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), becomes obstructed by the enlarged and diseased muscle, restricting the flow of blood from the heart to the rest of the body (obstructive HCM). In other patients, the thickened heart muscle does not block the LVOT, and their disease is driven by diastolic impairment due to the enlarged and stiffened heart muscle (non-obstructive HCM). In either obstructive or non-obstructive HCM patients, exertion can result in fatigue or shortness of breath, interfering with a patient’s ability to participate in activities of daily living. HCM has also been associated with increased risks of atrial fibrillation, stroke, heart failure and sudden cardiac death.

About Mavacamten

MyoKardia is developing mavacamten, a first-in-class, oral, allosteric modulator of cardiac myosin, for the treatment of conditions in which excessive cardiac contractility and impaired diastolic filling of the heart are the underlying cause. Mavacamten is reduces cardiac muscle contractility by inhibiting excessive myosin-actin cross-bridge formation that results in hypercontractility, left ventricular hypertrophy and reduced compliance. In clinical and preclinical studies, mavacamten has consistently reduced biomarkers of cardiac wall stress, lessened excessive cardiac contractility and increased diastolic compliance.

Mavacamten is initially being developed for the treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and has received breakthrough therapy and orphan drug designations for symptomatic, obstructive HCM. MyoKardia plans to submit a New Drug Application (NDA) for U.S. regulatory approval in this indication in the first quarter of 2021. Based on mavacamten’s mechanism of action and evidence of therapeutic activity, MyoKardia plans to study mavacamten for the treatment of symptomatic non-obstructive HCM and among a targeted population of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

About MyoKardia

MyoKardia is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company discovering and developing targeted therapies for the treatment of serious cardiovascular diseases. Insight Terminal Solutions Oakland Bulk Terminal, Utah Coal Industry: Salt Lake Tribune Tricks Seen

ONN – Insight Terminal Solutions Oakland Bulk Terminal, Utah Coal Industry: Salt Lake Tribune Tricks Seen

Wow.

So, at first glance, the “letter to the editor” in the Salt Lake Tribune, and called “Letter: Coal port is not worth Utah’s money”, would appear to be by some random reader of the paper and website owned by the publication, right?

But then the letter contained the same tired words I have seen again and again. That’s because my company, Zennie62Media, is the content development consultant to Insight Terminal Solutions. It’s a role I personally sought after and not just to tell the truth about the Oakland Bulk and Oversized Terminal (OBOT), but to use the vast network of interconnected blogs, video channels, and social media to the work the mainstream media will not do.

And I made the decision long ago that I would say who my clients are. The reason is simple: I believe that there’s no such thing as “objective journalism”, and the best way to attack what I consider to be the big lie, is to be direct and in your face about who we rep. I mean, you watch commercials for products, you know who the spokesperson is, you make the decision whether to hear the news or not.

So, when I was reading “Letter: Coal port is not worth Utah’s money”, something in my head said “Who is Micki Moulton?” So, I went to Google her name and saw this: “Search Results. Web results. Micki Moulton | Salt Lake Tribune Journalist | Muck Rack”. Turns out Micki Moulton is not a random resident who happened to chime in on the Oakland Bulk and Oversized Terminal, but a listed journalist with the same Salt Lake Tribune.

Yes, the same Salt Lake Tribune, where I wrote this:

Basically, the Utah Legislature is to vote on an action that will result in something like $20 million being invested, to some degree, in OBOT – the ultimate result will be the maintenance of coal industry jobs in Utah, due to the operation of the multi-commodity bulk terminal (not strictly a coal terminal) in Oakland, opening up trade routes for the transport of bulk commodities, coal in this case, to the Pacific Rim.

That should be a simple story, but the work to scare people away from coal (as if other bulk commodities were cleaner, and they’re not) and by the spending on politics and media by people like Tom Steyer (who spent millions of dollars in investments in California and Oakland elected officials, non-profit political organizations, and media efforts), and Paul Huntsman, in this case, have made the matter complicated. To wit, both Steyer and Huntsman have investments in renewable energy, with Mr. Huntsman both owner and manager of The Salt Lake Tribune, while also serving as President and CEO of Huntsman Family Investments. In turn,The Salt Lake Tribune has taken a wild stance against the planned Utah Legislature action to help the coal industry via an investment in the OBOT.

I wonder if this kind of Paul Huntsman “two-step” caused Jennifer Napier-Pearce to resign as Salt Lake Tribune Editor, earlier this month?

The Salt Lake Tribune is consistently putting out the message that it wants coal workers to lose their jobs in the middle of the Pandemic, get job training, and then go for jobs that, drum-roll-please, will not be there. If you look at the data the largest job loss numbers in Utah are in service industry-related firms, not in transportation, manufacturing, or mining.

Climate Change Is A World Population Growth Problem, Not So Much A Traditional Energy Product

The conventional wisdom is that climate change is completely the product of using traditional energy sources. But the fact is, climate change is really the byproduct of world population growth. To put it simply, we have too many people on this planet, and we need to slow the rate of population growth – a rate reduction of perhaps by 50 percent going forward.

It has been said by a number of researchers that reducing carbon emissions to zero would not stop the climate change problem. And then consider how we got here:

According to the United Nations Population Fund, human population grew from 1.6 billion to 6.1 billion people during the course of the 20th century. (Think about it: It took all of time for population to reach 1.6 billion; then it shot to 6.1 billion over just 100 years.) During that time emissions of CO2, the leading greenhouse gas, grew 12-fold. And with worldwide population expected to surpass nine billion over the next 50 years, environmentalists and others are worried about the ability of the planet to withstand the added load of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere and wreaking havoc on ecosystems down below. – “Does Population Growth Impact Climate Change?”: Scientific American, July 29, 2009

Meanwhile, coal demand worldwide has suffered the same problems as other industry sectors, and renewable energy has suffered even worse in many cases. But the fact is, coal is used to make steel, and 70 percent of the urban development in the World comes from it, and demand to use it to do that is not going away. The move should be to make traditional energy cleaner in operation, launch a Sputnik-level of investment to do so, and we need to slow the rate of world population growth. We have to stop the disconnect between jobs and the environment, and get back to a “Star Trek” mentality that asks what technology can make the world better? Then do that tech.

But, back to the Salt Lake Tribune. Something else is up. Why do I get the idea that this effort works to the benefit of Huntsman Family Investments? What will the Utah Legislature think when it gets wind of this? What about Utah’s coal workers?

Stay tuned.

Port of Oakland Hybrid Electric Cranes Deliver Major Emissions Savings

Port Of Oakland

Project part of Port’s Seaport Air Quality 2020 and Beyond Plan

Oakland, Calif. – Aug. 24, 2020: The Port of Oakland’s largest marine terminal said today it has cut diesel emissions from all 13 of its massive yard cranes by 95 percent after retrofitting them with hybrid electric engines. Terminal operator Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) said that the project will eliminate about 1,200 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually from each crane.

“Retrofitting our rubber-tire gantry cranes to battery power produced remarkable results,” said Crane Manager Ken Larson, at SSA Marine’s Oakland International Container Terminal (OICT). “We’re impressed with the huge drop in emissions from equipment that we regularly use on the marine terminal.”

SSA said that the clean air project would result in a 93 percent reduction in diesel fuel. The older engines used 10 to 13 gallons of diesel fuel an hour whereas the hybrids use about three-quarters of a gallon an hour, according to Mr. Larson. “We were honestly surprised to learn how little diesel fuel we need to use now,” Mr. Larson said.

The hybrid retrofit is the first project of its type at SSA terminals. SSA replaced 1,000-horsepower diesel generators on its yard cranes with 142-horsepower diesel hybrids. The new power plants have small diesel engines used only to charge a crane’s pack of batteries. Each crane has a housing unit that contains the hybrid generator.

Mr. Larson said that the project was challenging, including the construction of new electrical systems for input power protection when converting current from AC to DC on a crane. Mr. Larson added that the hybrid generators capture energy as a container is lowered. Besides saving fuel and reducing emissions, the hybrid performs better than the older diesel generators because there is no delay in power delivery to the crane.

“We’re delighted with this project because it reflects the way the Port advances its emission reduction goals by focusing on feasible technologies that can perform the heavy work of moving containers,” said Richard Sinkoff, the Port of Oakland’s Director of Environmental Programs and Planning. “It fits ideally in the Port’s Seaport Air Quality 2020 and Beyond Plan. We hope it serves as a model for other marine terminals to follow.”

Rubber-tire gantry cranes are industry workhorses at marine terminals throughout the world. Combined, the thirteen 90-foot-tall cranes can lift as many as 1,000 containers a day on and off trucks at OICT.

“We are pleased that an Air District grant has enabled the completion of the SSA hybrid crane project that will significantly reduce harmful emissions for many years to come,” said Jack Broadbent, Executive Officer of The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District). “The hybrid engine technology installed on these large yard cranes will help improve air quality and protect the health of those in the communities surrounding the Port of Oakland.”

The Air District awarded SSA $5 million in grant funding as part of the Air District’s Community Health Protection Program (CHP – AB134) to replace 13 diesel powered rubber-tire gantry crane engines with Tier 4 Final hybrid engines in order to bring about immediate emissions reductions benefits.

The SSA Terminals project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions. The Cap-and-Trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution.

California Climate Investments projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero-emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling, and much more. At least 35 percent of these investments are located within and benefiting residents of disadvantaged communities, low-income communities, and low-income households across California. For more information, visit the California Climate Investments website at: www.caclimateinvestments.ca.gov.

Planning for the crane conversions began after the signing of the CHP Program contract with the Air District on July 5, 2018. The first crane was retrofitted in February of 2019 and the 13th crane was converted in July 2020.

As Raiders Open Las Vegas Allegiant Stadium, Oakland Preps A’s Billion-Dollar Subsidy Ballpark

Raiders Allegiant Stadium Las Vegas

In Las Vegas, the once-Oakland Raiders did everything it could do to make the unofficial soft-opening of the still-under construction Allegiant Stadium a special event. And why not? Allegiant Stadium is a brand new symbol of what many (including me) hope Las Vegas can be, yet again, post-Pandemic: a tourist mecca for the World.

The Raiders rolled out a super-fancy season ticket box for passes that, sadly, will go unused for this wild NFL 2020 Season.

And in introducing Raiders Players to the facility, Mark Davis, Raiders Manager of the General Partner, said this (according to the Las Vegas Sun):

“Welcome to the Death Star, where our opponents’ dreams come to die. My father always said that the greatness of the Raiders is in its future. Well today that future really starts. This magnificent stadium was built on the backs of thousands of players, coaches, administrators and fans, who for the past 60 years have proudly worn the Silver and Black.”

Oakland-Athletics-release-updated-renderings-of-new-stadium
Oakland-Athletics-release-updated-renderings-of-new-stadium

And while Mark Davis and Jon Gruden and Raiders players enjoy the new Las Vegas Stadium, the Oakland A’s plan a $2 billion ballpark facility for Howard Terminal in Oakland’s Jack London Square. In a still-ongoing march to a planned 2023 opening, Oakland A’s President David Kaval is proving the Raiders wrong: that the City of Oakland was, indeed, able to cause the formation of a public subsidy program worth roughly double that of the $750 million the Raiders got (with the help of Las Vegas Sands Founder Sheldon Adelson) from the Nevada Legislature.

In a turn of events that proves the mainstream media does not know how read or how to do math, the planned infrastructure redevelopment zone law that was approved by the California Legislature and signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom last October, will result in the formation of a zone that assumes a small $2 billion base-year assessed value to serve as the foundation for a TIF bond with a 40-year-payback schedule.

In fact, Kaval agreed this was the case in our interview, even as he reminded us that the ballpark itself (the main frame) would be privately financed. At just an annual 4 percent rate of growth in assessed value, and 1 percent tax rate, the revenue total will be $1.4 billion by year 40.

The Oakland A’s ballpark legislation, if one bothers to read it, will allow for everything from financing assistance for affordable housing, street lighting, bridges, transportation, and it can be spread city-wide.

Of course, those who hate reading will go on chortling that Oakland’s broke and can’t afford this or that. Meanwhile, the A’s will emerge with the ballpark that will reform Oakland into an international destination.

Stay tuned.

ONN – SF Bay Area Bicycle Is Back: Bike Oakland & Alameda: 2.5 Ferry Stations
2020-07-16: 26.6 mile, 290 ft gain, ride attempting to visit the 3 closest ferry stations to me but had to bail half-way to the 3rd one due to calf cramps. Starting on 55th Ave and El Camile/Kingsland/Trask to Foothill, 40th Ave, International, High St & Bridge onto Alameda Island to take Fernside across the bridge to Bay Farm Island and around the shore to the Harbor Bay Ferry Terminal, then back to Alameda and Shore Line Dr and through the parks around Crab Cove to Central Ave which turns into Main St and to the Alameda Main St Ferry and then wandering around trying to find my way through the construction along the north shore of Alameda eventually taking Willie Stargell Ave to discover that the harrowing Posey Tube is closed, so it’s back to further wandering to get to the Park St Bridge back over to Oakland. Taking Embarcadero it’s clear both calves aren’t going to cooperate so rather than continuing on to the Jack London Ferry, it’s 5th Ave, E 8th St, E 12th St, step over to Bancroft Ave back to 55th Ave.
