Oakland, CA (press release) — On Sunday, January 19th, Living Jazz, a non-profit, Oakland-based organization, presents In the Name of Love, a civic and cultural event that pays homage through music to Dr. Martin Luther King King, Jr., one of the greatest humanitarians of our time.
Now in its 18th year, this cultural event is Oakland’s only non-denominational musical tribute, bringing Oakland’s diverse community together to honor the inspirational teachings of the great Dr. Martin Luther King King, Jr. The event also showcases locally and internationally known performing artists, children from Oakland public elementary schools, and archival footage of Dr. King.
Congresswoman Barbara Lee will present the Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award to Clarissa Douthard, a passionate advocate for children and parents, for her outstanding work on behalf of the Oakland community, as recognized by the City of Oakland’s Department of Human Services.
The Martin Luther King Tribute also serves as the final showcase for the choral component of the Living Jazz Children’s Project, a music education program that Living Jazz provides completely free of charge to Title One Oakland public elementary schools. Serving 300 2nd-3rd graders under the musical direction of Terrence Kelly and Bryan Dyer and accompanists Ben Heveroh and Bryan Seet, the LJCP opens the show. The 55-voice Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, under the musical direction of Terrance Kelly, follows with a soulfully stirring set of spirituals and gospel tunes.
