Tony Thurmond, the effective and popular and now former California 15th District Assemblyman, came from behind to win the race for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction over Marshall Tuck.
A heartfelt congratulations to Tony, who’s work to represent those who have less in Oakland and the East Bay gained him a foundation of support that propelled him to a win in California.
The race between Thurmond and Tuck was billed as Northern California vs. Southern California, but it was more a tussle of private versus public education ideologies – charter schools versus public schools.
The public sector won with Tony Thurmond.
And with that, came a number of tweets of joy, many from Oaklanders like former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan…
The #CA #SuperintendentofSchools race got less media but was called 4 #Assemby Rep #TonyThurmond #AB15 #Oakland #Richmond 1.6% /155,545 #votes ahead. Congrats to @TonyThurmond CA’s next Superintendent of Public Instruction! Never underestimate the power of public school educators to do what’s right – even when faced with lots of $ from billionaires and corporate interests trying to elect his opponent. #TeamTony #WeAreCTA
