A freight train carrying a corrosive chemical derailed at the Port of Oakland on Monday for unknown reasons, officials said.

Obviously, it’s OK for freight-haulers to bring dangerous chemicals through West Oakland. Wonder if No Coal In Oakland got any donations to look the other way? The Sierra Club’s so myopic, it’s webpage section on “toxics” only mentions mercury and in relation to, you guessed it, coal. No text about prohibiting nitric and phosphoric acids, which means they’re just peachy-keen with The Sierra Club.

The hazardous materials unit of the Oakland Fire Department responded yesterday to an acid spill from a shipping container at the Port of Oakland.
As informed by the fire department, the 40-foot shipping container was leaking corrosive materials of HazMat 1, 2, 3, E3 types.
The container sprung a leak of about 100 gallons of a mix of nitric and phosphoric acids, according to the fire department.
However, the spill was small and was handled by the on-site crews that managed to prevent the leak from spreading.
There were no injuries reported.
