Operations at the Port of Oakland came to a halt on Friday, as thousands of dockworkers and supporters marched through the streets of Oakland to protest against police brutality and racial injustice as part of Juneteenth celebrations.
The strike was called by Oakland’s longshoremen, as cranes and machinery remained silent for eight hours in 29 ports on the West coast.
Protesters were seen with signs reading “End systemic racism” and “Stop police terror.”
“There is many thousands out here, this is very important, it is part of what is going on nationally including especially in Tulsa, where Trump, on Juneteenth, a celebration of the end of slavery, calls for what is really a white supremacist clan rally and what can you say,” said Barry Thornton, a member of political organisation ‘Refuse Fascism.’
“We want to defund the police, we don’t need police, there are community organisations that could benefit from the millions of dollars that we put into the police in America and many black communities are struggling because they are not enough money funded toward them,” said Mary, another protester.
This year’s Juneteenth takes place in the wake of nationwide protests and racial tensions over racism and police brutality following the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and other black Americans.
On June 19, 1865, Union army general Gordon Granger proclaimed in Galveston, Texas that all enslaved African-Americans in the state were free, belatedly enforcing President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

Note from Zennie62Media and Oakland News Now: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
