Wayne Newton Mr. Las Vegas Talks 2022 NFL Draft, Oakland Mayor Schaaf’s Views On Las Vegas
Sorry, but I’m a big fan of Wayne Newton. Practically grew up with the man, from a far. So, you can imagine how excited I was to have the chance to actually interview the great one himself, in all of his Las Vegasy elegance at the 2022 NFL Draft Red Carpet. Mr. Newton did not disappoint.
Since we only had two minutes per NFL Draft Red Carpet custom, I managed to ask Wayne Newton about the rather unfortunate comments my long-time friend and god-sis Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf made about Las Vegas after the news that the Oakland A’s were planning a move to Sin City if progress on Howard Terminal Ballpark continued its slow pace.
Mayor Schaaf said of Las Vegas that it was a “gross dessert”, words that set off a firestorm of controversy, dominating the news in Sin City:

I told Mr. Newton about the comments Libby made as being unkind (because I could not bring myself to say her words that it was a “gross dessert” before the very Mr. Las Vegas hiimself, and he said that Las Vegas is full of some of the nicest people. “These people took me in at 15 years old and raised me and made sure I stayed out of trouble, and this is the home I wish everybody knew about. They know about Las Vegas, but the goodness that Las Vegas is becoming a certain cover here.”
In other words, Wayne Newton is such a nice man he could not bring himself to insult Libby, or Oakland, or even run the relocation of the Raiders in the collective face of Oakland.
That’s why Wayne Newton’s cool.
