What This Photo Says About The 2021 Oakland City Council And Who Is Politically Aligned With Whom?
As I say in the vlog, the photo was posted at the Instagram account of Oakland District 4 Councilmember Shang Thao. It was taken on the steps of Oakland City Hall, one week ago. The picture is informal and so much so that we can gain some idea of the individual personalities and who they’re politically aligned with, at least most of the time.
For example, starting at 9 o’clock, we have Oakland At-Large Councilmember and 2021 Oakland Mayoral Candidate Rebecca Kaplan. Councilmember Kaplan, who scored out the best on the recent Oakland Jobs and Housing Survey, is seen flashing a Nixonian Peace Sign. For what reason she did that, I do not know, but it communicates a desire to get along with everyone, but also a tendency to try and be all things to all people. That sounds about like my long time friend Rebecca Kaplan.
Then at 10 o’clock, we have Oakland District 6 Councilmember Loren Taylor. He’s trying to lean in to the center to make sure you see him. He too is running for Mayor of Oakland and is still listed as running for re-election in District 6.
Then at 12 noon we have Oakland District 7 Councilmember Treva Reid. The new-comer has elected to strike the pose of the Queen she is: above it all, in command, yet friendly in a “Yeah, but don’t mess with me” kind of way.
That brings us to 2 o’clock and Oakland District 1 Councilmember Dan Kalb. Dan’s standing noticeably away from his colleagues, yet still in the picture. But Dan looks like he’s just ready to get the thing done and get back to work.
At about 4 o’clock we have Oakland District 3 Councilmember Carroll Fife. The other newcomer is dressed like she’s a Las Vegas Raiders fan and headed to the game or a party, or both. But the presence of her City of Oakland badge means she’s business behind that pleasure.
And “business behind that pleasure” brings us to Oakland Councilmember Thao and Oakland City Council President Nikki Fortunado Bas. – Sheng in white and blue, Nikki in red, top to bottom. They are arm – and -arm and kicking their legs as if to dance. They’re the good time girls. Councilmember Taylor seems to be learning in as much to be a part of the fun as to be seen by the camera,
As I say in the video, they give a view of who works mostly with whom. Of the group, it;s clear that Bas, Thao, and Fife work together a lot. Rebecca is sorta with them, and kinda on her own. Treva is an island on to herself, as is Dan. Loren wants to be with Bas, Thao, and Fife more than with Reid.
Of course, that’s my view. What’s yours? Share this around and have some fun.
Stay tuned.

Note from Zennie62Media’s Zennie62 YouTube and Oakland News Now Today Blog SF Bay Area: this video-blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media , Inc. mobile media video-blogging system network that was launched June 2018. This is a major part of Zennie62Media , Inc.’s new and innovative approach to the production of news media. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a vlogger with the Zennie62 on YouTube Partner Channel, then uploaded to and formatted automatically at the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62-created and owned social media pages. The overall objective is smartphone-enabled, real-time, on the scene reporting of news, interviews, observations, and happenings anywhere in the World and within seconds and not hours. Now, news is reported with a smartphone: no heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop are necessary. The secondary objective is faster, and very inexpensive media content news production and distribution. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this, the problem is far less, though by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system network coding and seeks interested content and media technology partners.
